At least 10 dead, 50 injured in Iran train derailment

At least 10 people died and 50 more were injured in a train derailment in Iran early Wednesday, according to the Iranian Students" News Agency.

The incident occurred at 5:30 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) as the train was moving from the eastern city of Tabas to the central province of Yazd, the agency quoted Mehdi Valipour, head of the Red Crescent Rescue and Relief Organization of Iran, as saying.

Two teams of rescuers have been dispatched to the site of the incident, which is located 50 kilometers off Tabas, he said, adding that ambulances and helicopters have been sent to the site.

There were 430 people on board the train, and 16 of the wounded are in critical condition, said the official.
